I upgraded my graphics card from an X850XT to a 1950pro a few days ago. I was just wondering if it's necessary to use drivercleaner when going from an ATI card to another ATI card.

I seem to be having erratic performance in benchmarks. 3DMark06 wont even load and my 05 scores vary by up to 1000 marks when using the same settings. My general Windows performance has been really weird too.

I did not do that when going from a Nvidia 6800NU > 7800GT > 8800GTS and everytime it worked without issue.

Maybe something else is starting to fail like the system memory os CPU, I would run Prime85 to test the system stability.

Cheers.

Yeah, was thinking that myself. Just a tad weird that it's coincided with the install of a new graphics card.

Its best to, as you may still have registry entries etc... pointing to your old x850, i always driver cleaner, even if im just updating my drivers to a new set on the same card.

Nvidia is totally different to ATi.

ATi will quite happily screw itself up if you arent ultra carefull with wiping everything away, sometimes it does that even if you do and you need to reboot a few times between as well.

I use driver cleaner pro

Yeah well I uninstalled the drivers again and did a sweep with drivercleaner, which picked up loads of reg entries and stuff. Everything's working much better now. Thought I'd be Ok going ATI -> ATI but you live and learn.

Done a couple of hours of Prime95 with no trouble so far..

Cheers guys.

I have just done the same upgrade and didn't use drivercleaner.

Driver cleaner will more likely stuff things up as it deletes stuff the the installer expects. simply overwritting drivers with newer versions has never failed yet.

the creative part of driver cleaner is even worse. it will make it so you cant actually reinstall creative drivers with out a fresh win install.
