Hey, was wondering if I could get some advice from some more learned people on here;

I'm planning on beginning driving lessons soon, and I was wondering if I need a seperate license for a van? Something like...

Or can I just use my normal license (when I get it)?

Many thanks.

dont think so, I've got a normal license and drove a Transit earlier. Out of choice. For fun! No lies!

I've driven a small minibus and a transit on my normal licence. Best you drive it with someone experienced alongside you as there is a lot of difference in how you take corners and mini roundabouts, for example. I found parking up weird at first due to the different seating position. After a while you find it's much easier though due to the better view :)

You should be ok driving that as it'll have a rear view mirror and fair visibility. I wouldn't even dream of learning to drive in a proper van, my Movano is and absolute PITA to maneuver - and it's got parking sensors :p

Licences changed in the mid 90's didnt they, people who got theirs after cant drive a minibus or anything large without extra training? I know I cant drive a minibus or the 6 berth motorhome weve got for our holiday on my licence (2003) yet my parents can.

I learnt in a lwb VW Transporter.....isn't hard when you learn in one imo, as you adapt to the size easily, but is very different from anything an instructor will drive - so you have to learn to change between them quickly :)

Doesn't the minibus ruling refer to the amount of seats? Can't remember how many though. I think you're ok up to 10 seats or something on a normal licence? (pleads ignorance)

It'll be harder learning in a van my guess would be for a beginner, moving round and such. If you use it in addition to a small/normal sized car then it would be fine and speed up your learning.

I'm not a 100% sure if it's legal but I drove a Ford Tourneo (minibus) sometime back. I was 18 at the time, so I'm not old enough to have a D1 on my licence.

3.5 tonners may feel a little strange at first, but you should get used to them. Just be careful when reversing, as I smashed the rear light light cluster on one last week! :o
