Driving at the speed limit

It depends what type of vehicle you're driving.

Single carriageway = 60mph in a car/van, but 50mph when towing a caravan or trailer (or when driving a bus/HGV).
Dual carriageway = 70mph in car/van,but 60mph when towing a caravan or trailer (or when driving a bus/HGV).

HGV is 40 & 50 respectively, 60 on a motorway.

That's the issue. Someone who thinks it is only safe to drive at 40 in a 60 on a perfectly clear day, should not be behind the wheel.

They may suffer from the glare of the sun (as a mate of mine does) & drive accordingly slower....

Or have a back seat full of bone china....

101 reasons. Limit not target.... its not hard is it?

And why are people bleating on about making progress in the test? we all - should - know the test is out dated and flawed.

It does actually depend on the type of van. But I think you may be right, most vans probably fall under the reduced limits.

Does it? If you take a van to be a goods vehicle and under 7.5ton then it's 50mph on single carriage ways, 60mph on dual carriage ways, and 70mph on motorways. I personally think this is a stupid rule as a large 4x4 is allowed to travel faster than a Transit even though it weighs more and has a higher centre of mavity.

I sometimes cruise at below the speed limit

This happens very, very rarely and only if I'm ridiculously early for something, I'm dangerously low on fuel, or I'm in a strange mood :p

So you drive at 60mph on all those NSL windy country roads?

It's a limit, if it's not safe to drive at the limit then you shouldn't be driving at that speed, different people have different interpretations of what is "safe". Most people do not know the limits of their car and have no intention of doing so.

You have the option of overtaking if you want.

I live on Jersey so the reply was tuned to what happens here, slow drivers.
Regardless, you couldn't have known without checking each post but my point stands ;d

In my driving test about 6months ago, I should have failed because of a speed limit change. Anyyyway we went down a very narrow road, its 60mph but still it feels like a tiny country lane people fly down it and I think its stupidly dangerous, anyway the tester said to me why are you only doing 40mph, so I said its raining and I think this road being a 60mph limit is ridiculous, he said until you said that you'd have failed :o it was marked as a minor for lack of progress, stupid. Limit not a target! the road was empty too! whingey old git!

I don't care how fast other people drive (as long as it's not obstructive, like 10 in a 60) as long as they:

A) Move to the inside lane when I want to pass
B) Do not flash their lights and get all uppity because I overtook them
C) Just overtake if I am not going fast enough for them

Point B happens more often on single lane roads where overtaking is not so common, but if you are doing 40 in a 50 don't be shocked if I just overtake the moment I get behind you, or just after we leave a roundabout and you're meandering to the speed limit.

Point C happens at all sorts of different times. If I am doing 60 and you want to do 70, don't tailgate me. I'll maybe speed up if you don't, and I am more than happy for you to overtake.

Driving at 10mph on a motorway is just plain dangerous. Tbh i think driving stupidly slow is just as hazardous to others as someone bombing it.

It IS dangerous driving and you can be pulled for it and done, I *think* offhand that its half the speed limit or lower, you can be done for dangerous driving and driving without due care or attention. (obv the police will take the conditions and what your driving into account)

My instructor once told me that anything less than 50 on the motorway was a bad idea, although there is no legislation to this effect.

Reminds me of a recent trip up the M5, the fog was so thick that visibility was about 2 car lengths, the number of people I almost killed who had just stopped dead, or were rolling at 10mph was insane.

I've done 15mph for about 20 minutes on a motorway with really thick fog. Any faster would have been dangerous IMO.

The same happens when it rains. With heavy rain i've noticed that people will do ~40 mph (which makes sense), but sit in the left hand lane 5m off the back of the car infront! Far safer IMO to overtake them at 45/50 mph with good visibility and 100+m to the car infront.

the speed limit is a limit yes, but why o why do we hear of slow drivers getting fines for being so slow on our motorways.

I was only doing about 30 in the fastlane, which closing 15mph would have been fine - it was just the people who were stopped who I couldn't figure out
