If I use two XFX GeForce 7600 GS on a ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe motherboard, will I be able to drive four independent displays?
Will performance be good?
Are there any alternative ways of doing this?

As long as you expect them to be used as independent cards ( dont know whether mobo or GS are SLI, but as long as you dont want SLI it will work well)

What kinds of things are you wanting to do that require 4 displays?

One Game , i to monitor msn/im / webpages / encoding on a 3rd potentially

whats 4th for?

Or look at it another way - gaming one one core of an X2 or something like that, full speed - again encoding on other core + windows etc reasonable speed , anything else you wont get much performance left or one or other - or both will slow down to accomodate

all just (educated) guess work mind you

I intend to run Nuendo, Reason, PCDJ and remote desktop all simultaneously.
Also using three displays for Premiere whilst outputting video playback to the fourth is a possibility.
I currently have three 19" LCDs. I haven't bought a 40" widescreen yet.
