I am thinking about going on a driving holiday to Italy. Has anybody driven through the continent before? Would you recommend driving to Italy or should I take the more conventional route of just flying there? The idea of driving and making multiple stops along way sounds very appealing but would we be ok going without booking hotels etc first and just finding one wherever we end up each night along the way or should I plan it properly first with pre booked hotels for stops along the way?

Perfectly reasonable to drive to Italy imo. Personally I'd pre-book the hotels and have a plan in mind - especially if going during peak times. You'd probably be ok, but it would weigh on my mind a bit if I hadn't booked. Was in France last week and was unable to get a hotel near Calais on the journey back - wish we'd booked.

If it were me I would get an early morning crossing to Calais and end my first day in Annecy. From there it is nice and easy to go over one of the small passes into Italy. I would have a plan for the days when you are planning on going a long way, it's horrible looking for a place to stay in a place you don't know when it's late and you are knackered.
