Driving home an untaxed car?

Hi all,

I've just bought a new car from Car Giant, and have decided that I cannot wait till Wednesday and must pick it up tomorrow. Can anyone give me guidance on how I can do this legally if it's not taxed?

I intend to insure myself with day insure tomorrow morning and drive home. However, the car will be untaxed. If I can't get taxed, will my day insure insurance be rendered invalid in the case of an accident? I will get it taxed online when I get home, assuming it's the new style MOT document (last MOT was 16/01/2006), otherwise I guess I'll have to wait.

Cheers,

Nick

It will have the new style MOT certificate so taxing it when you get home won't be a problem. However, if you were to have an accident without having a valid tax disc, the insurance company may refuse to pay. So its not really recomended - can't Car Giant tax it for you at the time of purchase?

The salesman told me that I would be fine driving home without it - he says that's what everyone does...

I'm going to play it safe, I'll get them to tax it/get someone at home to do it online when I know the MOT details.

[Ninja edit] :o

Will double check again with them then, but I'll wait till I get home to sort out tax. I swear to God this is the first time I've ever been out of bed before 9 on a Sunday, I can't wait to pick it up!

:(

The car's not going to be ready until Wednesday, I've put down a bigger deposit and sorted out a loan - so wasn't a wasted trip luckily.

Guess I'll have time to play it by the book now.
