Driving in the US - Tips

Just come back from a trip to San Franciso from Vegas via Death Valley and Yosemite.

Roads in Death Valley and Yosemite were awesome, lots of lovely mountain roads. Hardly any cars and we didnt see any police cars till we got into San Francisco.

We hired a satnav from the hire company, it was $60 and possibly the best $60 spent on the whole holiday.

JEALOUS!!!!!! Amazing trip.

Should have just bought a SAT NAV. Hiring one from Hertz was going to cost more than buying one, so we just found a Best Buy. Also came in useful when we went back 6months later for a similar trip as the flights cost us £150 each on Air NZ :D

Have you driven an auto before ?

I hadn't and didn't realise you need to put your foot on the brake in order to take it out of park. That was embarrassing when trying to tell the rental car company that my car was broke .......

I forgot that you needed to press the brake to start the car, I was sat there hmmmm'ing for a while with that one.

Paid £16 for the satnav for two days through Hertz so not too bad. Rather have it than get lost.

I stayed in Florida in June and drove for the first time in America. Stayed at Linfields which is off the 192.

Driving in America is much easier than driving over here, purely because all the roads are straight and massive. It's hoenstly so easy.

Stop signs mean stop. End of.
Beware of School busses, as mentioned before when they stop they have a pop out sign which you have to stop behind. You'll get a serious slap if you don't!

Florida is ace, really really good place. Hope you're doing some of the parks! :)

Driving in New Jersey isnt so easy, but I think West coast is much more spread out and doesnt have the huge potholes nor terrible road layouts of NJ

Also school busses that are stopped on the other side of a dual carriageway also require you to stop! (I got serious amounts of airhorn abuse for not knowing this :D )

I found driving in the US to be incredibly easy. Relaxed cruising on fairly straight roads and not much traffic.

Yeah and for starting the car too lol

Have you got your own sat nav ?

what i was hinting at was that £16 could be put towards buying the USA maps for your own sat nav. That way you can re-use them if you ever go back there again. Works out cheaper in the long run. Plus it means you are immediately familiar with the menu system !

Two tips I would offer would be to be wary of using GPS devices in built up areas or large junctions as the size of some junctions play havoc with ones ability to read a GPS. Secondly, if you are travelling across states, keep an eye on fuel as sometimes you can be far from gas stations.

I am off to Vegas, did Disney and the parks years back was amazing. I am now going to the adult version of Disney. :D

Ah excellent, hoping to go there next year my self! :)

Yup, luckily we had a booklet with the main differences within our villa. Came quite in handy!

Looking forward to driving the car as well, not the usual boring corsa/astra you get over here:cool:

Ace :D

We had a Toyota MPV (there was 5 of us, all obviously with luggage), which had a surprising amount of kick behind it! If you've not been before everything is bigger, including their cars, the majority are auto's, but you'll enjoy driving there. it's so easy! :)

Post pictures :D

Have fun, and remember even if your in the opposite lane you have to stop for school buses.

Ohh and diesel is a green handle and regular petrol is a black handle, ( opposite of the UK ) round these parts anyways, caught me off guard when i was driving home from work one morning, tried to put diesel in my car, luckily the hose was wider.

I don't know about anyone else but certainly while in Florida I found driving much more pleasurable and relaxed than in the UK. I often found myself being 5mph or so under the limit even on the drive from Tampa to Orlando. In the UK I'll be in the outside lane...
