Driving with the handbrake on.....

So, my new car has a foot operated handbrake.

My gf takes the car for the 1st time today. I explain the foot/hand brake before I leave and think it's all ok.

She phones me 1/2 hour later, "has this car got a handbrake?"
Me, "yes, it's the foot pedal on the left I told you about"

"I've just driven half way to Stoke with it on, no wonder it felt slow"....


What's the worst that could have happened? She drove about 20 miles


No pastie smashing or take up the back doors replies please. :)
 
Haha, i have also done this before....

Will have just worn the brakes i suppose, i wouldnt worry about it too much. You could inspect them if you are worried. What car is it and what year ?

I was looking to replace the discs/pads all round anyway quite soon.

Would the engine just think its pulling a heavy load? It wouldn't overheat?


With the handbrake on, I bet the full gauge was going down as quick as the speedo went up!?
 
Engine will be fine. Might have warped the discs and fried the pads though. I had my handbrake stick on once and my rear brakes were smoking so much I couldn't see behind for a short while when I stopped after exiting the motorway.
 
Sounds like the classic case of 'Man is giving me instruction, I am a strong, independant woman, I shall nod along without actually listening to prove it' - only to find herself in the **** a short while later because of it.

Or is it just my OH that does that?
 
foot brake = hand brake? what car is that on?! that sounds pretty weird to me.

All I'd expect she's done is stretch the cable a bit

Despite being on my ignore list, I feel I have to respond.
