Just as a stab in the dark, have you ever used a Behringer Composer Pro-XL MDX2600 or seen one be used? My local audio store is selling an ex-display one for £50. It has a manual but no box, but that's not a big deal.
Not used one myself, but it looks like it haas a lot of features for the money. they can be had new for around £80, so £50 isn't a massive bargain but it's not a bad saving... Just check it all works before buying. :)

If you get good PA speakers you won't be disappointed. ;)

I can actually pick one up brand new for £65, so it's only a saving of £15. It's been tested though and the test was the first time it has been used - it's just been sat on a display for a couple of years.

Regarding PA speakers I'll probably get them from the same place. They're really laid back in there and will let you hook up a pair of PA's to a mixer and play a few tracks of your own CD to see how they perform. I'll probably take my speaker test CD down that consists of a few frequency sweeps, some noise (white, pink, etc) and some trance, hiphop, metal, light rock, etc. Tends to give me a good idea as to how well they perform under different input conditions. In fact it saved me from buying a blown speaker once that some ******* was trying to blagg as new.
