Drop shadows not working on desktop

The drop shadows on my desktop seem to have stopped functioning. I normally set performance in the system properties dialog to 'adjust for best performance', which puts Windows into a basic display mode & looses all the crap. I then just enable 'use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop' from the custom list so I don't see the coloured rectangle around the names of the desktop items. I've tried resetting, changing the performance to 'set for best appearance' then back again but nothing seems to work. Anyone know how to fix this? It's a small point but it's annoying me :? :x

Just by looking at that screenshot I can see you are running 16-bit color. Increase your bit depth to 32-bit and then all the nicety effects spring to life.
My colour depth was set to 32-bit under display properties -> settings -> colour quality.
