Ok so I dropped my laptop (I fell down the stairs at night time) It works for like an hour but then it randomly shuts off? Sometimes it will last 20 minutes before shutting off. Is this a motherboard issue?

It's still got 3 months left of 1 year warranty I know this isn't really covered by accidental damage but would they repair it? (It has no cosmetic damage what-so ever, possibly a motherboard issue).

It's Toshiba pro L650, paid £700 for it last year.

It sounds like it could be the fan not kicking in when it reaches a temperature which is why it's shutting off after a random amount of time.
But as it's still in warranty, like the others said, let Toshiba deal with it :)

Strange really as I have the same laptop and I managed to drop mine due to rushing college work and cables getting tangled . It totaled the hard drive but I bought a new HDD, fitted it, restored the machine and it's been fine ever since!

this is why i got an SSD in my lappy. I fall down quite often (cycling, walking, icy/wet whatnot), at least 2 times a year, and its always the hd that gets totalled on the slightest fall. Roll on SSD, 0 replacements in the last 4 years.

Could be a capacitor falling off. Does anything rattle inside?

I'm surprised the hard drive lived to die another day, quite a shock if it whacked your stairs.

Hmm after further inspection, I checked CPU temps and it was reading abnormally high temps of like 90 degree's so maybe the heatsink has been moved. Which would also warrant why it would turn off when my laptop reaches 100% usage.

It's in toshiba's hands now though, ill update this thread when I get some news.

Agreed, my slow netbook now has an SSD and while it's not really fast enough to take advantage of the extra speed, the increased durability is worth it.

You got contents insurance for your house.

If so it may be covered by accidential damage, I dropped my lappy at Christmas & I claim on house insurance.

Well if the CPU cooler is loose that explains a lot. If it's still on warranty then best use that and send it in, if not then opening up a laptop and potentially fixing it yourself is possible, for as long as nothing's snapped off, i.e. the moulds around the CPU cooler that hold it down onto the motherboard via screws.

...or if you do have house contents insurance then consider that but it will likely make next year's premium go up so way the costs.

Thats unlucky I had mine on the washer once when I was at my mums I left the room for a few minutes and the spin cycle started which threw my laptop on the hard floor. It chipped a bit off the corner but I was lucky as im still using it to this day with no problems its been about a year since it happened.
