and now the dvd rom extrudes slightly and when i push on it the laptop power cuts off. the dvd rom has power and you can open it etc but it isnt detected by windows.

the power cut off thing is worrying like.

any thoughts on whats wrong?

its probably just come adrift of the mainboard connector, theres usually one screw holding them in, just take it out and reseat it, at worst its damaged the mobo

i cant get it out. theres loads of screws in the bottom, ive taken out the ones i presumed were holding it in but nothing. or do i need to remove the whole of the bottom of the laptop?

Not looking good, it'll either be an attempt at opening and reseating or an expensive bill from somebody who will do it for you (+any parts needed) :(

Alternatively leave it if it's all still working OK and buy a cheap external USB DVD...

????

well as long as i dont touch the dvd drive all is well. a slight knock and the power cuts though:(

Here is a link to the HP website which has instructions and videos on how to replace the various components of your laptop. Just click on "optical drive" in the menu on the left to watch the video and get the instructions on how to remove it. Hope this helps.
