Hi,

well I managed to knock my external WD HDD (WD5000C032) off the desk last night and it sounds like it's completely fubar now. It sounds like it can't read the drive as it searches repeatedly for a while until it stops dead. The drive is not appearing in my computer but does appear in devices but only as "WD" nothing else.

I have tried running disk management, it appears there with an X symbol and tells me it cannot access sector. I tried "PC inspector" software, it appears there but with 0mb capacity and it cannot access it. run>chkdsk will not access either and the western digital data life software from the WD website pings up this error on any check:

Test Error Code: 11-Cable Test::Could not open SMART or port driver on drive 2!

I've ran out of ideas.

Double-wrap it in sandwich bags to stop condensation and put it in the freezer. When you take it out, sometimes you have a small window of opportunity to retrieve files from it while it's still cold. Never actually tried this myself though, just going on hearsay, but if it's fubar anyway, what's the worst that can happen?
