Dropping a chip..

Yes. Dropping a CPU from that height can damage it. Strange question really...
Aside from pins being snapped of or other physical damage you'll have to test it in a setup to see if it still works.
 
It can damage it, but if its a carpet you maybe ok. I dropped an old Athlon XP a few months back about a foot onto a desk and it worked. It's generally static electricity that causes the worst damage.

Just look for any physical damage (bent pins etc), and then try it out. It shouldnt damage anymore components, just fail to POST.
 
It's a C2D chip so there aren't any pins on the chip as they are on the motherboard. As I understand it, there are no 'movable' parts inside the chip so there couldn't be any physical damage could there?

But it wouldn't be impossible, could dislodge somthing, especially with the weight of an IHS to weigh it down. There's no way to know unless you test it, maybe isn't damaged but there's still chance that it is.
 
ah it will be fine, put it into the system and stop been a girl. (That's if you did drop it and it wasn't just a question) :D
 
What are the carpet specs, thickness, pattern, underlay? Could all play a part... :D
I'd say in the worst case scenario it would be a thin carpet on a concrete floor and the CPU could hit the floor on the corner. If there's nothing shaking inside the IHS then it'd probably be fine.*

I have never dropped any components before but then I won't attempt any upgrades until I don my favourite Superhero costume, you guys may laugh but it works for me! :D
