Dropping Seti @ Home & possibly Boinc

I thought that CP.net was the biggest resource hog at 60MB. I'm running two instances on the ol' X2 in 2GB of ram.

Mind you I've noticed iTunes is between 50-70MB!

In case anyone is wondering, i've removed boinc fully from just under 100 machines, and more will be getting removed next week. Blame seti 512 or whatever it is.

I've lost a lot of credability at work due to seti. We have proved that it is the reason for major slow down and other problems with the pc's.

It may take a couple months for things to settle down, and then, I may look at some alternative DC, but to be truthful, I think boinc has, shot itself in the foot.

BOINC isn't really the problem, it's SETI, and unfortunately I have to agree that for various reasons they have shot themselves in the foot.

Hope to see you back soon - once you've found a project you're happy with.

sorry to hear that Bully - and sorry to hear that you've lost credibilty because of it

I guess in your case the problem came from Boinc taking control away from you and Seti rolling out the new work with total disregard of whether people's machines would be able to cope with the more demanding work
In hindsight they should probably have made such a change available as a seperate project run alongside for a while to allow people to test it before switching over fully but I guess the problem there lies with Borkley not having the resources to do so :(

Folding had similar problems when they first released the QMD units onto HT/Dual-CPU Intel machines though at least there you have to specify both "Large WUs" and "-advmethods" so you at least had a choice, people did get caught out though I'm sure :o

hope to see you back crunching for the team once the heat has died down - talking of which at least your computer rooms won't be quite as roasty throughout the summer as they would have been :p

Sorry to hear this bully.
Losing credabilty is one of the unforunate effects when things go wrong and is also why i chose folding. You have far more control over what types of work units you get. I set mine on the deadlineless ones and let them get on with it. I've not had one problem with it.

Hope to see you up and running on whatever project you chose ver soon. [cough]folding[cough]
