Hi all (well, the drummers)

I'm planning on laying down some drum tracks soon so I think it's time to have a fresh change of heads as I've had my ones on for over a year now - I don't play my drums that much as they are at home and not in Sheffield, and I give them a fresh tune up every time I go home, but it's time to replace them for recording I think!

My drums are made of birch (Gretsch Catalina Birch) and so I'm looking for slightly more focussed heads to match the tonality of the birch. I'm looking to replace both sides, so I'm thinking Evans EC2 over Evans G1/Resonant Heads for the toms and an Evans EMAD for the bass drum batter side.

My snare is maple (Pearl Masters MMX) so I was thinking about having a combination of Evans Genera Dry / Hazy 200 to keep a warm, clear tone with not too much in the way of overtones.

Any thoughts? I've always used Evans heads but I don't mind a dabble in Aquarian / Remo ones, I just don't know the types and their websites aren't nearly as informative as the Evans one.

Cheers! :)

K, I'll bite.

I use Remo pinstripes on my toms, I have fusion size drums and they're nice thin heads that resonate very nicely and bring out the tone of the drums. I've used the equivalent Aquarians in the past but didn't like them as much (found them a bit dull), and I've never used Evans so can't comment there.

I've got a Remo powerstroke 3 on my bass which is probably my favourite bass head EVER. Again I've used an aquarian and a different remo one in the past but I kept coming back to the powerstroke3. Tune it fairly tight and it just shines.

I'm forever changing my snare heads and I haven't settled on a favourite there yet so I won't comment on that.

Anyone else?

I was thinking EC2's as I don't want too much resonance, I want to have the resonance controlled without having to resort to putting moongel on the toms. The Coated G2's I have now do a decent job of it. Interested in the PS3 bass drum head now though, I don't really have a preference. (EMAD has always done it's job)

My drum sizes are 8-10-12-14-16 with 22 bass & 14 snare, so it's going to be an expensive refit! :p

I'd hate to think what pinstripes would sound like on an 8" tom. I've got a coated G2 on mine and it's still a bit quiet.
Keep in mind that with any sort of pre-muffled head (EC2s, pinstripes, hydros etc.), you're really not going to get enough volume to cut through unless you're being close mic'd.
I'd definitely go two-ply for the floor toms, though, they have a tendency to ring on forever with lighter heads.

Personally for snare heads I wouldn't dream of going for anything other than a 1-ply coated. Normally with a dot. 2 ply heads don't feel right to play on, and they just cut out too much volume.

How about a DIY E-kit with Remo 2 ply mesh attached to a Roland TD12/20 module ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist! :D
