Drupal performnce

Anyone with experience of drupal websites, how does the performance compare to wordpress and joomla?

Been reading a few articles and some seem to suggest drupal can be quite slow.

Also whilst on the topic of drupal, how is easy or hard is it to make themes (and plugins) compared to wordpress?

We are now going to buy a program called Artisteer, which makes theme's for us.

Looks good to us, can anyone point out any negatives with it?
