i am having a problem getting my new system to accept my matched pair of 6400 800mhz ram

currently i am using a 512mb pc 5300 667mhz and it works fine, but it refuses to boot with either chip of my 6400 stuff.

the matching pair were purchased from ocuk, and i have tried every combination of slots and each chip together and one on its own.

I have read there are some issues with the ds3 and 6400 ram and wondering if there is a resolution to this problem.

spec:

intel core 2 duo e6600 2.4ghz conroe
Gigabyte ds3 f4 bios
8800gtx gfx card

Get the F7 bios

updated to F7 bios, still wont boot

depending on the slot i insert the ram into i get different beeps

from slots 1 - 4 (1 being closest to cpu, 4 being furthest away);

slot 1 - long series of beeps: which i think is the memory error
slot 2 - single continuous beep: not sure what this is
slot 3 & 4 - system powers up but no beeps atall

the system doesnt post atall with this ram.

my single stick of 512mb pc5300 667mhz ram works fine though, but i need the 2gb as having only 512 is creating a bottleneck

Send it back I'm afraid. That RAM should work fine in any of the combinations of RAM slots you've tried. It sounds like either the board or the RAM is borked.

i assumed as much, guess ill be on the phone to ocuk then for an rma.

should i get replacement ram, or spend a little more on better stuff? this is the OCUK value ram

There are about 6 other threads going with people having memory issues with Geil, Corsair and all sorts of stuff. The OcUK is good stuff - I'm using it myself. The Geil is on special offer though!

you set the voltage right with the more powerful ram? may well need 2.1V, boot with the cheapy stuff, set the voltage, turn off, isntall new ram, boot and see.

Very true Socaddict, this is a common problem.

Also, stoobar, can you list the complete spex on the memory in question here? The initial problems I saw were with Gigabyte vs Micron ICs but, I thought it was solved for the most part with the above mentioned F7 bios.
