ive just built a new rig with the DS3 mobo and the E6300 cpu and over the last couple of days the system has been either completely freezing or it restarts when ever i try and play full screen games such as half life 2. Ive checked the core temps and they are averaging 35-40C. Im running 1GB of DDR2 ram at the moment and no overclocking has been done on the system its still running at the default settings. Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing the probloems.

specs are
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN)
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-061-GI)
Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT667D2) (MY-083-CS)
HIS ATI Radeon X1900 GT ICEQ 3 SILENT Heatpipe 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-057-HT)
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80GB 800JB ATA-100 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-000-WD)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-046-WD)
Zalman CNPS9500-AT Aero Flower (Socket 775) CPU Cooler (HS-020-ZA)
Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU - Black Nickel (CA-012-AK)

What are reasonable timings for the ram?

re boot and press delete to get to the main bios screen.
Press 'controll' and f1 together. this brings up memory settings.
Go to the last line on the left side and more settings should be there.
Memory timings should be set to Auto.
Reset this to manual and input your speeds.
If your ram is rated 4,4,4,12 then try 5,5,5,18 and save.
If random restarts go away then its your mem.

the bios is different. you dont need to do that on there to get it. its in a section in the bios. can you specify under what options do i change the timngs as there is a list of them

ive tried changing the memory timings its had no effect the pc is still restarting. Sometimes it does BSOD, which is making me think that it might be hard drive related.

Is the hard drive new? If its old I would scan for bad sectors, as I had a 80gb seagate which would crash my pc due to the bad sectors - not a bsod though, a completle freeze (mouse not moving).

ive just installed a floppy drive into the system to try and flash the bios. the system is picking up the drive but the LED is staying on permanently and everytime i try to access the drive it just keeps asking me to insert a disk

is the boot order correct? you might have to reset it.

I notice that your PSU is only 400w, i'm pretty sure that your x1900 requires more than that

Do you only get restarts/freezes when trying to run games? If so then it could possibly be your PSU isn't up to scratch

Turn the data connector over, so it's the other way.

the FDD problem is sorted but the drive is nackered anyway. I think i will get a bigger watt PSU to see if its that.

ok guys. ive had an idea for jcs. i have a spare 350 watt psu handy. i was wondering if she can use that to run just the graphics card without problems to do a quick test to see if it is the psu. what i mean is, use one psu to power the mobo and hdd drives and one to power the gfx. is this possible? will problems occur through doing this i.e. frying components etc?

the reason im asking if it will fry anything is because i tried something similar with cathode lights and fried the transformer

ok ive found out that the gfx card needs a 500+ wattage psu and jcs only has a 400 watt psu. so im gonna be traveling to overclockers to buy her a new one :( then im pinching hers hehe

ok update. its not the power supply thats causing problems but we are no closer to what it is. time to contact overclockers i think
