DS4 Boot problem

Hi all.

I've just read the sticky regarding the Gigabyte mobos - i currently have just bought myself a system which is the following:

E6700
DS4
2x Geil 6400MHz 1GB
2x WD Caviar 16MB 250GB Drives
1x 1800XT
Coolermaster 650w PSU

seems to be that when i plug in the normal power connection, as well as the +12v connector, the mobo boots up, the cpu fan doesnt start, the monitor doesnt come on, and then the mobo shuts itself down, then restarts, then shuts down...and carries on in this cycle.

No beeps come from the motherboard either during this stage.

Can anyone advise please? I read something in the sticky saying that there was some issues with some of the DS4's being made. Has anyone had this?

I've put in for an RMA - but i'm concerned anyway.

cheers all
Nick

sounds like a faulty board you have their

i fixed a pc simliar problems a few weeks ago
when 20 pin and 4 pin were plugged into board @ same time
it just shut off, but if i just stuck 20 pin it would spin cpu fan.

i replaced board and didnt see that problem again
i also had to replace the PSU.

yes - this is exactly it. its only when the 20 and 4 pin is plugged in at the same time. if its just the 20 pin plugged in, it boots fine without any problems (except graphics card)

i would test it with some cheap DDR2 RAM but dont have any to hand.

its plausable that it could be BIOS - and i havent reset the CMOS as of yet either.

Its definately not a PSU problem as i tried it with a separate 500w psu - and still got the same results.

Your not plugging the 4x pin in with the 20x pin by chance are you, i.e into the same connector as you don't have a 24x pin.

The PSU has a 20x pin connector with a 4x pin hanging off, and then a separate 4x pin for the +12v connector.

Even when its just the 20x pin and the 4x +12 plugged in, the system cycles and doesnt boot.

Which of the TWO 4 pin connectors are you using to make the 20 pin connector into a 24 pin connector ?

the psu has a fat cable which has a 20 pin and 4 pin connector - they are distributed to make it impossible for the 4 pin to be used as anything else but to make the 24 pin.

then there's a separate 4 pin connector which is standalone from the fat cable, which is used for +12v.

Sounds like the well documented mem voltage problem to me.

could quite possibly be. would the mobo boot without any RAM installed? as in would it get past the power on/off cycle?

interestingly enough before all this i powered it on without the cpu fan installed - and it booted all the way through til it shutdown to protect the cpu. this is why i dont think it could be a ram problem?
