DS4 on-board sound problems?

I originally posted this on Sound City, but doesn't appear that that forum is frequented by many...and I know there are tons of DS3and DS4 users here.

When I originally installed XP on one of two new DS4's I got last week, the on-board sound was good, with the software detecting the jack sockets etc. and I was able to gt crystal clear sound through the front audio.

Follwoing a fresh install of XP after other issues, and all of the mobo drivers, vga etc. and a few other bits and bobs, I have now discovered that the front audio socket has a quiet but high pitched whine to it, no sound and the jack isn't detected by the software either.

I know the simple solution is to re-install XP, but I would like to avoid this if possible. When I uninstall the sound drivers the whine disappears from the front audio, but comes back and still doesn't function correctly when the drivers are re-installed.

The whole issue revolves around auto detection of the front port being u/s.

Any ideas please?

I will put it more simply....

Does anyone with a DS4 manage to get the front audio out detected when they plug in speakers/headphones, or do you have to disable the detection in the software (which kinda defeats the object)?

Cheers

Bump....someone here must have a DS4 with the front audio header in use?

Yes, but mine works fine. It seems odd that it did work, but after a fresh install it's gone bad on you.

I have to be honest and say that I just set the automatic installer do all the work on mine.

Have you thought about just running that again completely and letting it reboot as it does so? I had terrible trouble with an ASUS 945 chipset motherboard where the sound wouldn't work if the drivers were installed in the wrong order. Just a thought.

Thanks for the reply.

Have done a fresh install and its still not right. At least I can get it to work ok, it just won't sense the jack going in so doesn't switch off the speakers.

I can live with it.

What case do you have? Some cases have two sets of front panel header cables - one for HD Audio and one for AC '97. If you use the wrong one then strange things happen. Thermaltake definitely have 2 sets of cables for the different audio standards. Worth a look?
