I bought a tool from an online retailer (only £12 [now wishing I had spent a bit more :o ], but thats hardly the point...)

It doesn't seem to be very well made and upon trying it out the results are rather poor (and IMHO its not suitable for purpose), now obviously I'd like to return this tool, but I'm not sure quite what I should be expecting, which act should I be returning it under? do I have to pay postage? can I arrange my own postage? (or do I have to pay whatever postage they want?)

Thanks in advance

is it really worth it for £12? chalk it up to experience?

i bet you'll have to send it recorded post ~£3, and then it'll be subject to appraisal on their part, so you might not even get a refund. you probably can't return it under 14-day because you've already used it, and depending on what you used it for, you might have damaged it.

it's not broken, it's just not very good, and as such, you probably wouldn't be entitled to a refund.

Why would the Driving Standards Agency care? ;)

I really wouldn't bother. Chalk it down to experience.

Likewise, I'd just mark it down as experience. If you buy a tool for £12 then, in all likelihood, you'll get a £12 tool.

You are returning it under the Distance Selling Regulations which allows you the same opportunity to view the product as you would in the shop. The online retailer is liable for the return postage.
