DSG gear box - crunching noise after approaching junction

Hi all,

I realise this is a bit of a "take it back to the dealer!!" thread, and that's exactly what I'm going to do but I'd like some thoughts or know if anyone has experienced this before.

I noticed today when I approach a junction but don't stop (i.e. stays in D2) and then accelerate, the car makes a crunching noise. A similar noise as if you were moving forward and shifted into reverse or attempted to change gear without your foot on the clutch.

It's an 11 plate Polo GTi. Anyone had a similar thing? Google only mentions slow take off after a junction but this seems fine on acceleration.

Cheers

I presume 7 speed DSG? Is it accompanied by judder or shaking? Does it happen on warm gearbox only (after 20-30 minutes in town) or all the time? Does it happen (in addition to slowing down and speeding up) also if you are stopped at a junction with wheels turned and then do a sudden start?

7 speed yes. I didn't notice any judder, only the noise. I'll check tomorrow if it does it again. It happened today after 5 minutes of driving so it was probably still cold. The dash shows an electric oil temp display as well as the normal oil temp so I'll keep my eye on that.

Moving off from D1, stopped position is fine. Quickly accelerating while in gears 3 and above is fine too. It seems to be that phase between stopping and stopped (around 6-10mph) if I accelerate then. There has been one time where it jumped, learner driver style, at lights but it's never done it since.

Thanks for the help.

My golf went in recently for a similar thing and they changed the clutch pack. I say similar...mine was juddering when accelerating in D2 from a low speed, not crunching. Crunching sounds more serious.

I would get that looked at (which your going to I'm sure) my Scania does the crunching thing, but only when selecting its ultra low ratio's (crawler gears which iirc are not syncromeshed) when it does this using its normal gears, its a known fault.

Called this morning and booked it in for Thursday. Apparently they'll need it for a few days :(

I'll keep the thread updated when I find out why.

Didn't know you could get a 7 speed DSG in a Polo :)

Polo GTi :)

Shame they charge so damn much for the insurance on the curtsey car! I've got a fair bit of driving to do before Thursday so I'll have to learn how to avoid the problem until then.

I quite like the idea of a Polo GTi but a lot of people seem to be having issues with the DSG box... Why couldn't they just offer a bloody manual, I'm being put off now :(

DSG is better.

Re: loan car insurance, my Aviva insurance covers me for those with standard excess. Might be worth checking your policy? I just gave them a print out of the policy document and they didn't charge me. You could say they shouldn't anyway, but that's another argument.
