DSG Gearbox - Emergency mode

;)
Hardly surprising when you consider the £/performance gain. I could get my 140 mapped for £600, which will give another 100hp!

I remember back in the day of owning a Clio 182, a set of throttle bodies were around £2k, and you'd be lucky to get more than 20hp!

You could do it for half that with MHD ;)

Did they say whether they flat out refused warranties on them or how they proved the map? It would be an interesting dilemma if you managed to buy something Approved Used which had been mapped!

I don’t think VW will sell one second hand so it would be a 3rd party dealer you would buy it from.

If it has a TD1 flag against the car any driveline warranty claims would be rejected.

I have an identical model Golf R and this thread is the very reason I have no desire to void my driveline warranty.

Keep us updated with what VW have to say, the gearbox is the very thing I worry about most and is why I will likely extend the warranty come September 2020.

I remember a guy with a TTS (which is a pretty similar combo to the Golf R) who had this issue. Turns out it had been mapped by the first owner who had part exd at a main dealer. This dealer hadn't checked (they later admitted) so they had sold him a previously chipped car. It went on for quite some time as they were fighting and it was getting close to going legal, them insisting he had done it, him refusing and saying it was there already. I forget how they finally proved it was done previously, maybe the last software version or something.

The first owner was particularly unhelpful as you would expect.

I wouldn't assume a dealer has done anything to be honest. Plenty of people have things that would clearly have failed the 1,000,000 checks the dealers claim to have done on used cars for approved used, so assuming they would hook it up to the system so they could check for unexpected changes to the ECU would be a stretch

If I was doing mine I would seriously consider one of the ones where they physically replace the "chip", its not that much more expensive and means you have your original ready to swap back in should you need it.

ABT do a plug in system that looks pretty good, but it's a lot more expensive than a remap. A stage one for my car is £1,500 (252ps increased to 316ps). ABT are also doing the Seat approved upgrade for some Cupras so I imagine that know what they are doing, you'd hope.

I've concluded I'll just buy a faster car next year with warranty.

Yeah think it was ABT I was looking at as well. IIRC they also do an insurance policy alongside so whilst its a lot more expensive than some others its not like for like.

Right, got a bit more time this evening to give a better update... been on the go most of the day getting the car recovered for a second time, taken to VW and fighting a bit of a battle to get a courtesy car

So here it is on Sunday, after being lovingly washed, waxed and dressed up all pretty.

Fast forward to Monday evening and im stuck on the A50 at McDonalds roundabout with a car that wont go into any gear (forward or reverse).
This is the digital dash warning message i was getting, only stayed on for a few seconds so did well to catch it with my mobile, shall use as proof if VW claim its 'fine':

A few errors on the ODB port when first plugged in:

3hrs later get it loaded onto a flatbed.

Dropped it off late at night near a VW dealership who were not particularly helpful, so had it again dragged to a different VW main dealer where my service plan is, and they were much more helpful and accommodating... ready for 2nd recovery in 24hrs:

All parked up in an MOT bay (mainly because it was in a straight line for being slid off the back of the RAC van:

And I'm back in business with an 'R-line' which looks the part but doesn't have quite so much 'go'...

I'm now hoping i hear back positive news from the dealership that they can see the codes and recognise the fault and will replace the unit in full... anything else and i'll be disappointed.

Nottingham to Lancaster takes 7 hours?

Depends if you want to live in Lancaster for the rest of your life, I was including the return leg :D I got held up around Stoke and at numerous roadworks. Think it was 3hrs 30 there and 2hrs 30 back, so maybe 6hrs rather than 7 :)

so you had RAC cover via VAG ?, and after you travelled to non-helpful dealer, next day, then had to call them again to move it ... convoluted process.

When mine showed that error it needed an new gearbox including clutch packs. That was 15k miles ago. Just lucky it is still under warranty.

No VAG only supply 1 years cover. RAC was through bank account. I got the car recovered to near my parents house which is also very close to a dealer as the dealer is on a main road with double yellow lines and bollards blocking access, so needed moving twice either way.

Yep, just had the call from the dealership and the gearbox and clutch pack have been ordered, arrival expected after bank holiday weekend, so keeping the R-line for another week.

Whilst it's in there I've asked them to review the exhaust system as the tips are corroded to the point its flaked off and pitted, see if they can warranty that as well whilst it's there!

Should have got the Titanium one!

Out of interest, have you used the launch control much? I've only tried it a few times in mine, but the up changes are certainly a lot more brutal than even in sport mode. Can't be too good for the box.

Yeah I was starting to look at an Akrapovic one, as it's a VW part so would maintain warranty (at least that was the thought) but I'll chance my arm at a new exhaust whilst it's there. Won't be done for a week or so.

Scary too think how much this would cost someone if the car was out of warranty..

And it even more scary seeing that a 2 year old car needs a new gearbox already

Over £6.5k at a dealer. Very rare though for the DSG to fail apparently. Even when tuned they can handle allot of power with no problems.

I believe ABT modifications do not affect your warranty on certain models, certainly on the continent in any case. They are very well respected.

Don't think that arrangement extends to the UK.

ABT Sportsline offers the best warranty solution on the market with 2 years warranty up to 100.000 km from the date of the first registration. The warranty will be offered in following countries: Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Italy and Poland.
