Is it worth waiting for the 3DS to come out, or just going for the DSi XL?
Apart from the 3D, which doesnt really bother me that much, what does the 3DS offer over the DSi?
I only want it to play on airplanes, as I spend a lot of time in the air at the moment.

I loved my DS, but then sold it because it wasnt getting a lot of play time.

The 3DS will be getting bought though, looks brilliant, the graphics look superb aswell.

Plus resident evil looks amazing!

It's not just the 3D effect, but the 3DS is a completely new platform/the next generation of Nintendo handheld hardware.

e.g. GB/GBC -> GBA/SP -> DS/Lite/DSi -> 3DS

It does offer backwards compatibility with the older DS hardware games, so this really is the most obvious choice to get, but as you said, we have a while to wait for it's release yet.

If you just want to play the current and huge catalogue of DS games only, then the DSi XL is a decent choice, especially if you require the bigger screen.

Personally for me I will wait for the 3DS. I'm still using the standard old first model DS.

I'd just get a DSi, I've heard that the XL's screen, while bigger can make games look more pixellated and ugly. The 3DS won't be out here until at least March or April at a guess so if you can wait that long and don't mind spending £200+ on a handheld then do that. Also as others have said, you won't be able to play 3DS games in 2D on the other DS consoles, but you will be able to play DS games on the 3DS. As the others have said it's a new generation of handheld and not just a slight modification of the current ones like the DS Lite, DSi and XL.

Not true for all game, Nintendo games such as Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart look a lot better on the DSi XL and making them easier to play. Newer games such as Golden Sun look great on the DSi XL.
I own all 4 models of the DS and I favour the XL a lot more but that’s probably due to it being easier on my eyes.
Personally I would get the XL now as some places are selling them for £120 or less if you look around. If you like the 3DS when it’s released then you can sell the XL to put more towards the new console.

Is it just a handful of games, or is it widely accepted that most games look better on the XL? I've no experience of using it myself, I've only ever played with the original and the DS Lite. :)

It's the same resolution on a larger screen. It's obviously going to look worse, unless you need the larger size due to poor eyesight.
