Hi guys,

I currently have my own ADSL connection into my flat, I'd like to switch to fibre as I can seem to get 76mb fibre for just £4 extra a month (currently on an upto 17mb connection for £20).
The flat below me has had a fibre connection before and on dslchecker it says WBC FTTP downstream 330mb, upstream 30mb, available now.... when I enter my phone line number.
Websites like uswitch say fibre is available for my postcode, however If I try and go through the process of ordering a fibre package from any ISP they all say fibre is unavailable in my area.

Any idea what's going on here? do I need to call openreach/BT to find out what's going on?

Cheers.

Hey, random, I also live in Cornwall and went through something recently where they had engineering work going, essentially moving the fibre to a new and closer cab. During that time the results were all over the shop, sometimes I could get 80mbit, other times fibre wasnt even available.

What results do you get from this out of interest? https://www.homeandbusiness.openreach.co.uk/fibre-broadband/when-can-i-get-fibre

Your problem here is an unfortunate but easily predicted outcome of everybody being able to call their faster-than-ADSL products "fibre". You can actually get fibre - e.g. a piece of glass poking through your wall. However, most ISPs aren't interested in offering the product, they just offer VDSL but market it as fibre.

So your property can get fibre optic broadband, but it can't receive "fibre optic" broadband. This limits you to a handful of providers, as mentioned above. The cheapest offering is likely to be BT with a cashback offer and crossing your fingers that more ISPs become interested in FTTP before your introductory offer expires.

Yeah I tried Vodafone and talk talk, I'm with plus net atm.

I can get infinity from BT, 52mb I think for £30, seems expensive compared to Vodafones 76mb for £24, but then again I'm paying £20 for upto 17mb which is actually 11mb so that's even worse value.

but then again I'm paying £20 for upto 17mb which is actually 11mb so that's even worse value.

That's due to how ADSL work, it's up to 24mb but you have to be extremely close to the exchange for those speeds. The further you are the lower the sync speed. VDSL is similar where it's fibre up to the cabinet, maximum speed being 80mb but distance from you to cabinet will affect speeds as well.

The fact that you can get FTTP which is fibre to the building means you're pretty much almost guaranteed the advertised speed, but as mentioned not all ISPs will offer FTTP. As far as I know BT will offer these packages (advertised as Infinity 3 and 4).
