Hello all,

I'm looking to get a DSLR camera. I have never owned a DSLr before and thought the way to do so was to just jump in and try one out. I'm not an expert photographer at all but would like to do more.

I'm not looking for a super high end camera but want a relatively new one. I have been looking around and determined that I would like one with a dual set of SD slots. One with a tilting/rotating screen may come in useful. (How do people find this feature? Do people actually use it or is it just a gimic?)

I like the idea of HDR features.

I basically just want some advice really.

I was looking at Nikons site and saw their range but how does the range actually compare? Is there a sort of hierarchy of them? Is there a way you can gather the specs by checking the model numbers?

I see the D90 is available but isn't that a really old model now? I just want to make sure that one I buy isn't two years old before I even open the box!

Kind regards,
Neil

Don't know, can't see that it matters tbh as you won't find a better crop camera, unless your planing on waiting for the D7100 that will likely cost allot more.

I may have a D700 in the members market soon, that is likely the best camera you will get for the £1K mark.

The D7000 is now two years old, but as Rhys says, so what? If you insist on dual card slots then it's almost certainly the cheapest camera available with that feature. My opinion is that you'll find the D7000 intimidating as a first DSLR and you'll probably be better off with a D5100 or D90. The D90 because it's got a good viewfinder; the D5100 because it's got the D7000 sensor and a moveable screen.

The Nikon hierachy for DX DSLRs is:

Entry level: D3xxx
Advanced entry level: D5xxx
Advanced amateur: D90/D7000
More advanced amateur/semi-pro: D300s

After that you're looking at FX cameras and even more money.
