When shooting video for an extended period of time the sensor overheats, I was wondering if I should try and attach a CPU heat-sink to aid in cooling. Or just buy an external screen to take away the heat that the screen produces.

LOL!
Imagine Canon's new EF-Heat Sink.

In all seriousness, no, doing any of those OP suggected will either make the camera not work or don't affect the issue. Might be better blowing nitrogen liquid over the camera.

Tbh this sounds a little crazy Lol.
Don't want to keep recommending the 'N', but I hear their sensors don't overheat during extended video use.

I've seen video dollies(?) with external screens. It's probably the reason ? The 5D MkII manual clearly states that the camera can overheat, there's a status icon for that...

External screen is usually larger, better resolution, can be positioned / moved without touching the camera..... overheating is probably lower down the reasons why.

The overheating si to do with the sensor, amplifers and read out circuitry.

I know to film House they used used something like 8 5DMKIIs that were kept in a cooler and roated every 5 minutes, Makes me laugh when people think that DSLRs is a great cheap way into videoography, how is buying multiple DSLRs and ktitign them out with proper external screens, mounting options, focussing pulling equipment, external mics etc. workign out any cheaper or easier?

also dslr lenses tend to exhibit focus breathe which isn't very good fir video either.

as for the overheating, would having a small fan help much?
