I treated myself to a ATI Radeon HD 7970 graphics card last week and used it for a few days. I decided it was overkill for me because I only use my PC skype and internet. All the good games are on consoles so I rang the shop I bought it from to return it they said I would have to pay for return postage plus 20% restocking fee.

Are they allowed to do this?

Return shipping, yes

Restocking fee, no

EDIT: may depend on something in the t and c's although i still don't think they're allowed to do it

Pretty much as others have said:

If you bought in person, in a high-street shop, then they have no obligation for taking it back, so they can charge what they want to take it back (Although some will just refuse, unless it's faulty)

If you bought online, as long as you've told them you want to return it within 7 working days of you receiving the item, then all it should cost you is the return postage (Pretty sure they can't even charge you the postage it cost to get to you in the first place)

Lastly, as Cleeecooo said, if it's a personalised/customised item (Which I highly doubt as it's a gfx card), then DSR doesn't apply.

Why the **** did you buy it then? What was going through your mind at the time?

What sort of treat is that, considering there is nothing it can physically do to improve skype or the internet?

Lol, I just imagined someone walking into PCworld and coming out with a 7970, 3960X and watercooling gear :D:p

Which would cost them a million billion pounds, break just after the warranty ended, have no overclocking options at all and would somehow be about the same speed as a pentium 4 coupled with a 7600gt.

:D
Ofcourse, you'd pay more for the "anything happens" warranty but apparently getting manjuice all over it isn't anything:rolleyes::p:D

True, didn't think about that... I was trying to think of how it could apply, and all I could think of was custom etching in the fan shroud :p

lol!

must be trolling surely?

Who in their right minds spends £500+ on a graphics card and they don't play games?

me. My e-peen is considerably bigger than yours
