DTS-ES will it work to some degree on a DTS decoder

DTS-ES uses Matrix encoding for the additional channels (Just like Dolby Prologic extracts additional channels from an encoded stereo source).

Played back through regular DTS equipment it will play back as a 5.1 source, no sounds are missing, or lost, they just become part of the regular channels.

I dont think the above is specifically correct... DTS-ES uses 6 discrete channels plus the LFE channel, thus giving the rear centre its own individual channel.

Dobly Digital EX uses a matrix'd channel that is encoded into the rear channels and is technically a 5 discrete channels plus the LFE.

Back to the original post, yes any DTS enabled amp will play a DTS-ES source, you just wont get the extra channel.

You are both kinda right.... there are two types of DTS-ES - Matrix and Discrete. The only DTS-ES DVDs I have are the LOTR films which use the discrete version.
