Dual 2007FP Questions

I’m building a new PC and I need to update my screens. These dual sammy 172xs have served me well, but its time for a resolution and screen size jump.

I want to keep a dual monitor set up so I have been mostly looking at Dells range… to tell the truth mainly because of the looks. The entire range is consistent and they stack side by side very well.
I don’t think a 20”/22” wide will offer a big enough resolution jump from the 17” 5:4 screens, so I have been looking at the 20” 4:3 screens – or more precisely the 2007FP.

(Also thought about a 2408WFP with a 2007FP secondary, but I have been off put by the reports of quite bad lag. Noticeable lag on the desktop just isn’t acceptable; I don’t care how good the picture is. I’m not ruling it out as a possible future upgrade. Maybe when the price drops and a later rev comes out or maybe a 2409 that fixes everything ;) )

So anyway, dual 2007FPs:

I intend to play games etc, do a bit of photo editing, general desktop use and I would also like to run my PS3 through one of the screens. I currently use a HD Projector with my home consoles which is perfect for games / films etc so I am not interested in using the PC screen as a primary console monitor. More the fact that I’ll probably pick up PlayTV, and I don’t particularly want to watch TV in the dark with PJ on etc etc and the fact I don’t want to turn the PJ on and off just to catch a 30 min TV show or just to check what the PS3 is recording etc. I would much rather have the HDMI connection that is running to the PJ split and have a signal connected to one of the PC screens so I could just change the source and check up on things on there. Or maybe watch a little TV through it while PC gaming etc

So a couple of questions:

With the PS3 running through the DVI port, how good is the monitors VGA port for PC use??

How well does the monitor handle a 720p PS3 signal?
Does it support HDCP? I’m assuming it will display a 1:1 720p picture with black bars top and bottom and not stretch the image?? (HDCP shouldn’t be an issue as I’m not going to watch bluerays through it anyway…)

The 2007FP Has gone through the dell panel lottery… for my use, which is general hobby level photo editing and fairly relaxed gaming (WoW, various FPS etc – no Clan Haxx0rz DM type stuff), which type of panel would be best?

The S-IPS or the S-PVA ?

As far as I understand it, S-IPS will over a more natural colour range and wider viewing angle (not that the viewing angle matters to me) but may suffer from lag or will at least be slower than the S-PVA panel which may offer better gaming performance and black levels??? Or is the difference really not at all noticeable unless you perform lab tests on the damn things…? :p

Thanks. Hopefully someone can confirm some details and make my monitor choice a little easier :)

MVA (Multidomain Vertical Alignment)
- compromise between TN and IPS technologies
- superior color reproduction over TN but not as good as IPS
- very good viewing angles but less than IPS
- higher contrast than TN or S-IPS means very good blacks
- dead pixels are black
- slower pixel response than TN or IPS
- details can be lost when directly viewing dark areas
Premium-MVA (P-MVA)
- same as MVA except ...
- "overdrive" technology increases pixel response but still slower than TN
- may have slightly degraded color reproduction due to "overdrive" process
PVA (Patterned VA)
- same as MVA except ...
- larger viewing angles
- higher contrast levels means darkest blacks
Super-PVA (S-PVA)
- same as PVA except ...
- “Magic Speed” (the Samsung equivalent to Overdrive) improves pixel response
- slightly improved color reproduction
- slightly improved viewing angles

IPS (In Plane Switching)
- improved viewing angles over TN
- very good color reproduction
- slower pixel response times than TN
- dead pixels display black
- lower contrast levels means blacks are not as dark as VA based panels
Super-IPS (S-IPS)
- same as IPS except ...
- likely best color reproduction of all TFT
- less expensive to produce than IPS
- improved pixel response

At the end of the day, look at what you want in a monitor and pick the panel type you want !
Imo though, S-IPS is by far the nicest screen type on the eyes, TN panels give me migrains after a while.

I have dual 2007wfp's , and i absolutely love them, good all rounders. I'm not sure why you see getting the none widescreen monitors as better, widescreen monitors feel a lot more natural to look at, not to mention look much cooler :p

How well does the monitor handle a 720p PS3 signal?

Can't really judge on this, but i can tell you that my monitor has 1:1 settings, aspect, and fill. So you have a decent enough choice, these options were greyed out at the screens full resolution (as there essentially all the same) but allows you to choose at lower resolutions fine.

With the PS3 running through the DVI port, how good is the monitors VGA port for PC use??

VGA seems fine for me, very little difference between DVI and VGA anyway.

Thanks for the reply :)

I want a resolution increase over my 1280x1024 17"ers. I don’t feel that the 1680x1050 that 20” or 22” wides offer give me that increase.

A 20” 4:3 runs at 1600x1200. So not only is it pretty much matching a 20/22 wides horizontal rez, its also increasing the vertical rez by a lot.

I’m not against wides, like I say, i'll consider picking up a 24” wide to run as primary with a 20” square as a secondary - but when the time is right.

Both S-PVA and S-IPS sound like better panels than TNs. They seem to only fail in the response time department, so I guess it doesn’t matter which panel you get if colour accuracy isn’t your primary goal. Maybe PVA for the better blacks… maybe one of each for the best of both! haha

If anyone has a 2007fp and can confirm how a 720p signal is handled I think I would jump in and grab the first 2 screens I could get my little mitts on.

More ramblings:
If I was buying a single monitor I would indeed go for a big wide, but I love the dual screen set up and think having 2 monitors is far superior for multitasking. But I also think having 2 monitors almost negates some of the reasons to go for a wide… any office perk of a wide, such as 2 documents open on the same screen, is beaten down by having 2 full sized screens available.
The only thing I can think off where a wide would be better is basically games and films. But - I have a 73” HD projector with a full home cinema speaker set up, im not going to be using my PC to watch a film when I have that thing behind me ;)
And well as for games, yeah its nice having that bit more view on the edges but having the bigger rez the 20” square provides would effectively give me more of a viewing window anyway…

MVA / P-MVA / PVA / S-PVA Compromise for All-Around Use
These panels are a compromise between the fast pixel response times of the TN panel and the excellent color reproduction of the IPS panels. Contrast and blacks are best of all the panel types. Viewing angles are similar but slightly inferior to IPS.

Sounds perfect to me :)
