Just a quick question- want to try out Ubuntu again.

1) Install Windows on a 250GB HD
2) Install Ubuntu on a 120GB HD

When installing Ubuntu, will it add the relevent boot options so I don't need to go into BIOS?

Yes it will. Be sure to install Windows first because the Windows installer will overwrite Ubuntu's bootloader and force you to repair it manually.

Pay close attention in the installer to not nuke the Windows installation.

How much HD space does Ubuntu 7.10 32bit use? Out of a 120GB HD how much space should I allocate? Should 8GB be plenty?

generally, I have quite a small root partition (usually < 10GB) and mount another partition or drive on /home/

I have never come close to filling a root partition.

Ok I want to use the remaining free space on the 120GB, so created a 8GB plus 2GB swap. Is this correct?

ah just noticed "/" so changed the 8GB partition type. For bootloader what should there be, Windows is installed on SDC1 (250GB)

You could either install your bootloader onto the same drive as Windows. This will then give you a menu to choose which OS you want to load... something like this:

Otherwise, you could stick it on the 120GB drive, and whenever you want to load Linux you'd just configure your BIOS to boot from that drive instead of the drive where Windows is installed.

Yeah it's working on the laptop, but trying on the desktop, it worked last time. Installing again I'll see if the bootloader option pops up.

How come bootloader option doesn't display which HD SDB number when choosing the Windows drive? I've selected HD0, but I have no idea which HD that is.

nope still booting into Windows..
