Ive got versions of vista and XP now, and was wondering how i could run XP on one HDD with Vista on another?

Noob question sorry :D

Cheers,
Dan

Well if you did it that way, you would have to just change the boot priority in the BIOS when you wanted to swap OS's. You can install them both on the same HDD but on different partitions. It's a lot easier than you imagine and window adds a menu to choose which OS you want to boot

Hmm kk, ill slap em both on my 160gb.

Another noob question, is the only way to make a partition by booting from XP disc, through the blue scren?

NOOB! :p

Dan

There are applications to do it. I use Partition Magic, but it costs. Im sure there are free versions of software.

Another note, make sure you install XP first, and the partition the drive, then install Vista, as the XP boot menu will not pick up Vista if its on the drives before. Ive made this mistake and havent been able to boot to Vista for a couple of months.

you can do it with the vista disk too.

bare in mind that you must install XP first, then Vista. after installing vista you will need a program (VistaBootPro) to boot to XP again.

I never used any programs ? I have two partitons. Started off with win xp and win xp 64, then installed vista beta over win xp64, then installed vista premium over win xp32 and then install win xp 32 over vista beta. Never had one single problem.

Now ive already got XP installed and used Acronis Disk Director Suite to make a new partition.

Shall i go ahead and whack vista on?

Ha ha same, just got it all set up with one problem.
Apparantly i dont have enough priveliges to open Dis Directior Suite =/

Ive made sure im admin, any ideas?

Ahh help.

Now when i unrar some things it says "This security ID may not be assigned to the owned of this object" for all of the files inside the rar =/

Help, this is why I held off changing to vista in the first place. Didnt want all these problems!

Try this mate,

How to Activate the Hidden Vista Administrator account:

To add the Real Administrator account onto the log on screen simply do the following:

Logon to Vista using your normal username and password. (If you have a password). Click Start and type in "cmd" then right click on it, and click “Run as Administrator”

Now type the following:

net user administrator <password> /active:yes (Then press enter)

Now Switch User or logoff. Now the Administrator account should be their. (Note: It is not advisable to use this account full time)

GRRRRR.
After formatting again to try and sort out the acess denied thing and boot up it said "NTLDR is missing, press ctrl + alt + del to restart"

Thought, "Ok this is just anoying now, ill just stick visa on only and be done with it."

Now when i install vista, it does the first bit, reboots and just sits at the screen where it says "Press ay key to boot from CD or DVD"

GRRR!

Any ideas,
Dan

That's normal... The message disappears then it continues with the install. Don't press any key otherwise it will start the install from the begining again.

:)

i'll add to the stupid questions:

If i install Vista 64 on my pc (currently installed XP SP2 on C drive) on my c drive also - do i then have to reinstall all the programs like office/outlook/ntune/sonicstage etc etc for them to work in vista??

O RLY? :p

No it would just sit there, was sitting there for about 1.5 hours solid while i watched TV other side of the room.

I too would like to know about reinstalling programs once I install Vista.
I am planning on getting Vista Ultimate (quick question - is Ultimate alright for a home PC or is it some special version?), but I want to dual-boot it on my XP-installed PC.

The thing is, I have loads of programs/games/etc. already installed. Will I have to install them again to see them in Vista, or does Vista figure out they are there?

Inquiring minds need to know :)

So im in the administrator account now, and it wont let me change my actual account to an admin one?

WTF?

So every time i want to unzip something i have to switch user and come onto the admin one?

Im seriously regretting the change already!
