Most linux distro's will come with a bootloader that installs itself on the boot sector of your hard drive. After your pc posts it gives you the option of which you'd like. It's on a timer so defaults to one or other after 10 secs or so.

It's also possible to install said bootloader onto removeable media e.g a floppy. Throw in the floppy, select Linux and away you go.
