I tend to blow the trumpet for Ubuntu but I'm sure others will chip in. Try spinning a few different ones up in VM's and pick the one you like best.
An additional SSD to dual boot from is a good idea. Disconnect the Windows drive then install on your "new" SSD then once installed power down and re-connect the Windows drive. You can then use BIOS boot option to decide which OS drive to boot from
