Dual booting unbuntu and XP pro - can I have 1 partition?

I was thinking having a FAT32 partition with both XP and unbuntu on... Will this work or will my computer catch on fire and explode if I try?

Re-partition your disk into two logical partitions (maybe using Partition Magic 8) and then install Ubuntu on the new logical partition you made. When installing Ubuntu it will ask you what partition you want to use and will install the new file system (think it is EXT/2 and EXT/3).

being pedantic, ideally you want at least 3 partitions for a linux system, /, /boot, and swap.
