Just reading the sticky and is says

'You should install each operating system on a separate logical drive. If you install multiple operating systems on a single drive, you may experience problems when you attempt to run those operating systems.'

But its dated 2002, I was hoping to dual boot with win xp pro and vista can I use the same HDD? I was going to create three partitions 1 for xp 1 for vista and 1 for data.

Advice on this would be great :D

yep you could do that, I install xp on first partition then vista on the next. Other part can be left for data :)

google gives guides but to be honest they use 3rd party tools which are not really needed, XP can partition the drives as can Vista on the initail setup

edited, beat me to it :p

Thanks guys, why does the sticky say install on different HDD's? Also how much space (GB) do I need to leave for xp and vista?

Will I get the option when I boot up my pc asking what os I want to boot into?

i think it's because it saves time making partitions..

Speaking from experience (HDD with XP failed today!) I'd personally put OS' on separate drives. Then if one drive dies (like mine...) you always have the fall-back option of using the other one. Definitely a MUCH better idea.

Just got into the setup for xp pro and the unpartitioned space is 131069 MB but ive got a 250GB seagate HDD, anyone know why this is?

It doesn't say install it in different HDDs - it says "You should install each operating system on a separate logical drive"

a logical drive is different to a physical drive...

don't worry about xp setup not seeing the whole drive. when it's installed, install service pack 2 and it will see the rest of the disk. :)

Are your sure, I don't want to sound rude Marc. Its just that I don't want to have to bother with this setup again. Have you had this before?

gareth only got sp1, will have to download sp2

Marc, does this always happen with HDD's over 130GB? Ive not install win many times.

Can I create 3 partions in the win setup, I think you only have the option to create 1?

yes. but you could create yourself a new xp disk with sp2 integrated if you like. you just need your original xp cd, the full sp2 download, a blank cd and a cd-writer. :)

just create the one partition for xp and continue to install it. then when xp setup is complete, install sp2, then use disk management within xp to create your 2 other partitions. :)
