I own a Asus GTX 690

If I want to do SLI do I need to purchase the same manufacturer GTX 690?

I'm thinking of picking one 2nd hand.

To do SLI does it have to be the same card, could I stick in a 680?

You can get any 690 and run Quad SLi, they're all the same. Make sure you have a powerful PSU.
You can't Tri-SLi with 690 and a 680.

Many Thanks

I don't see selling my 690 is worth it, would have to add money to what I sell it for to get a 790 if they bring one out.

So was thinking of doing SLI gtx690 (in essence a quad) as picking a 2nd hand 690 may be the same as what I have to add for the newer card.

SLI 690 should kick ass for a few years - unless we go to DX12?

Yep, would be good for a few years until you need more than 2Gb of VRAM pretty much.

One Asus GTX 690 and one EVGA 690 here and still going strong.

You need 3 Titans to beat a couple of GTX 690s.:D

kaap you don't run the quad titans day to day then?

and do you think they'll release a 790? would love to see what one could do with no thermal limits underwater with GPU boost 2.0

I run the GTX 690 PC most of the time, I use other PCs for benching fun.:)

The problem with using the Titan PC 24/7 is it runs very cool with water all round but it still throws out a lot of heat and I am not watercooled.:D:D:D

The problem with releasing a GTX 790 is the GTX 690 already fitting the bill, err Titan style cooler and better vram than the GTX 680 (overclocks higher).

The one thing they could change is the GPU clock speed (you can already oc a GTX 690 to GTX 770 clockspeeds).

The other way they could do it would be to put 2 GK110 chips on the same board and underclock them quite a bit to keep the TDP down to reasonable levels, but this could lead to a very expensive card.
