Suppose I want to try out the Core I7 and already have 2 sticks of normal DDR3. Would those sticks work on the X58 motherboard, or would I have to buy a specifically designed triple channel DDR3 kit?

most of the dual channel kits operate at far higher voltages (~1.8-1.95V) than i7 can support (1.7V max iirc), so you would have to severly slacken the timings and speed to get them to work.

It "should" work but, the frequency you'll get will depend on how well the modules you have will run at 1.65v Vdimm.

Yes it will work, but they may not run at the rated frequencies/timings with safe i7 voltage. If it's just 1333 mem then there's a good chance they will do that with good timings on under 1.65V

What's happening to ddr3 prices all of a sudden?! That's ddr2 pricing!! Did a large batch fall out of a delivery fan or something??
