So at present 16gb seems to be the RAM sweet spot. Trouble is 2x8 is much cheaper than 4x4 set ups. For example using a quad channel board like an X99 would using only 2 RAM sticks have any noticeable performance hit over 4?

Also would buying 2 lots of a 2x8 set see any compatiblilty issues?

In terms of gaming you'll hardly see any difference between dual and quad channel. No issues running RAM in dual channel mode on a quad channel board.

So would it be best buying 16GB (2x8) now and then consider more 8GB sticks later on?

I could buy 4x4 but it is a shame that they seem to be much more expensive.

can this work vice versa? so quad channel on dual channel board aka z170. As i have quad channel kit which i would like to use on a skylake build

its been tested and shows dual vs quad on ddr4 makes no difference.
if i have a quad channel motherboard i would still buy quad channel ram because adding a second dual channel kit latter could make for problems with timing.

Yes. ram is just ram 1, 2 or 4 sticks. the only differance is your sticks are matched to run together
