Dual channel with i7

Yeah i thought so! Just someone selling 3x2gb stick of ddr3 on the MM,supposedly for an i7 build, and it says dual channel on them and i checked the code on the sticks and again says they're dual channel!

If its 3 sticks its tripple channel anyway, regardless of what the sticker says. Perhaps it was originally two sets of dual channel ram, and 1 of the 4 sticks was faulty. It will work just fine as a tripple channel set.

Number of channels is purely based on how many slots are in used. On the Smackover board, 1slot = single, 2slots = dual, 3slots = tripple, 4slots... dunno for sure, probably single, but it could be that the first 3 slots continue to run in tripple, and then the last slot is "added" to the first, and just that part of the memory is running single channel.

There is no such thing as "Dual Channel DDR3" or "Triple Channel DDR3".
The modules are all the same - dual and tripple channel refers to the memory controller and how it makes use of the memory modules.

I could buy 3 individual memory modules.
I could buy a tripple pack
I could buy a double pack and add a single memory module
I could buy two double packs and only use three modules

All the modules are the same whichever option I take.

Whether you get a dual or triple channel kit your memory needs to run on a voltage of 1.5-1.65V, anything more and Intel warn that it's dangerous for the on-die memory controller.

All triple-channel kits are packaged specifically for i7 so are all low voltage stuff, whereas many dual-channel kits are older DDR3 modules needing a higher voltage than the i7 memory controller is rated for.

There is only small differents between having dual and triple. But you can get some really good triple ram at low prices now and rated under 1.65v, which is a MUST for i7 cpu's.
