right...yes, too complicated for the subject line so I tried to sum it up and I think I failed!!

I've got a iPhone 3G contract with O2 that runs out at the end of May. But the phone is just running so badly now its ridiculous, apps crashing out, pausing for like 20sescs when in the middle of things, sudden restarts, texts taking several mins to send...or not sending at all until I manually restart and a new one for this week is app updates downloading and then the icon sitting there saying "installing..." for hours on end

so anyway, I was thinking of jumping off the iPhone ship and moving to the Desire HD (that mahoosive WP7 phone is tempting tho)

But I wanted to get one now but keep my current number. So could I...

-Get 2nd contract
-Put old sim from Iphone in new phone - would I need to change anything to make it work? (I'm pretty sure my tariff was called "iPhone <something>")
-Wait until old contract runs out and transfer my number to the new contract
-let old contract be ended and carry on using new contract with old number

It would be even better if this was all possible by staying with O2, I have a friend who doesnt really have the money to top up her O2 phone and she apparently can text me for free on her PAYG tariff

Cheers

A: Buy unlocked (critical) or O2 locked (buy from o2 store) phone - put SIM in it from previous contract - good to go. On next month negotiate for a new deal, sell this phone or the one you plan to buy right now on ebay.
B: Phone up O2 and get a new contract a month early - not sure how they are on early contract renewals - the benefit of this will be down to how good the offer for the next contract is although if you watch their cinema adverts, it should be as good as a new customer. Sell old phone.
C: Find a phone/deal on mobiles.co.uk or similar site that beats whatever O2 offers, buy this, accept the loss of a months contract and ask O2 for your PAC code - give this to your potential new network (or ask for a same network port if you stay with O2 but you should do option B if this the case). You may have to pay a termination fee of the final month.

There are other options but i'd stick with this.

Thanks for the replies...

hmmm, well i'll give O2 a call maybe tomorrow and see if they will be prepared to upgrade a little earlier

tho I did ask in a CPW shop, as thats where I got the phone from originally and they said there would be no upgrade until a month before the contract runs out...the person had quite a "FULL STOP END OF GET OVER IT" attitude when I asked as well!

well, I have finally got round to speaking to O2 and they've said that the only way I can upgrade early is if I get an Iphone4, and even then I have to pay a £40 charge...

I dont think I'm ever going to get a 24month contract again!

£40 charge for an iPhone 4? Do it!

It is nothing like the 3G (which runs like a bag of nails now), a whole new world.

I dont really want an iphone anymore though...its all nice and stuff but I just want something different.

Do what i did last yr...upgraded to the iphone4...sold it, made a cool £500 for the 32gb model then used that money to buy another phone...
