Dual core virgin here, just impulse ordered an Opteron 170 to replace my 3700 and stave off a complete rebuild for a few more months.

Question: I have windows xp home, does that work with dual cores? Read somewhere it doesnt which would be annoying, this is not good if i have to buy a whole new frikkin OS. If it does any bios/software changes have to be done?

Basically someone point me in the right direction for the reading i need to do.

cheers!

Home works fine with dual cores, it is just multi CPU's that present a problem,

As for what you need to do, obviously check that your current BIOS supports multicore CPU's, you may also need to head to device manager, and then remove the current CPU driver that is installed and let windows install a multi CPU driver.

Lastly, on (rare) occasions windows has to be completely reinstalled for the second core to be detected, but these situations are extremly rare it seems. Often doing the steps mentioned in device manager are often more than enough to get windows to play ball with the new CPU.
