When XP first came out, I seem to remember that XP Home only supported a single CPU (when a dual CPU actually meant two CPUs, and not dual core) and that if you wanted to use two CPUs that you needed XP Pro.

What's the present state of play on XP? Will all three versions of XP now support dual core CPUs?

Dual core (e.g. X2) processors work fine in XP Home. As far as I'm aware this has always been the case, though of course in the early days of XP dual core processor for general consumers didn't really exist so it wasn't much of an issue.

Your right in what you're saying XP Home only supports a single physical CPU where as XP Pro has physical multi cpu support.

IIRC All versions support dual core cpu's ie X2

XP Home supports 1 physical CPU or up to 2 logical CPUs (e.g. P4 w/ HT or dual core CPU)

XP Pro/MCE supports 2 physical CPUs or up to 4 logical CPUs (e.g. dual P4 w/ HT, quad core CPU, dual-dual core or P4 w/ HT)

These are licensing restrictions only. They are not any indication of some sort of kernel limitation.

There has been a long standing rumour that XP Home does not support SMP, period. That rumour is 100% false.
