Dual Core oddness?

I have a opty dual core, but sometimes it doesn't quite seem right, most noticablely when i'm encoding divx to dvd-r. If i set the priority setting in Nerovision express to 'normal' and ecode, and then try to watch a film say at the same time, the film is jerky. I have to set the priority setting to 'below normal' for the film to be ok. Any ideas about that? I thought dual core would be able to encode on nerovision and watch a film or play a game smoothly at the same time?

im gonna get flamed for this, but i have only ever experienced good dual core power on intel chips.

When using the amd setups we have here at work, i found abnormalitys such as your getting,

The intel dual core setups seem to handle such tasks far better imho.

Puts on flame proof jacket.

It depends how the encoder is written, if it's multithreaded then it will be trying to use both cores in which case when it's set to Normal then your media player will be fighting for CPU time on both cores - hence the stuttering. Using the Below Normal setting will give precedence to the media player and hence all is well.

The easiest way to check is fire up taks manager when you're only encoding and see what the CPU load is, if it's 100% (or near enough) then the encoder is multi-threaded. If it's only getting to 50% or so then the encoder is only using one core and I've no idea why you would be getting stuttering in the media player.....

any encoder ive ever used and ive used dvd santa, nero vision express xvid encoders lame fo rmp3s flac encoders and they all work absolutely brilliant and i have a pentium D 805 and at stock it was quick but when oc'd it was a lot better so id have to agree intels encode video and music a lot quicker imo

My opty 165 encodes and I can watch a dvd with no issues. Not sure what the issue is with yours.

Have you used a dual core AMD to compare that against?

nope but in a month or two i know my connie will have ure opty in submission  , end of the day the intel dual core was what i could afford with no job but i have one now and i think ill be deffinately getting a conroe :D i know amd dual cores are quicker then pent D's end of the day i got the best i could aford at the time if i would have had opteron dual core money then i would have got it :) , and multitasking i did once and it was totally by accident lol i was running cs source went spec minimised that cos the phone rang , then loaded quake 4 up while encoding a movie and i didnt notice anything at all then when i closed quakee 4 i was shocked at it handled it lol :p

thanks guys. I think NVexpress is dual threaded so it's running both cores and cpu usage is shown as rather high. But i still thought that if i then wathced a movie that windows would automatically sort it out and the movie would be smooth...
