Recently one of the cores on my opteron 175 has been running at full usage despite no visible load on the core from task manager. i have tried shutting everything down to just essential services to no avail. it happens from boot up and it will also happen randomly having booted up normally. is it likely to be a software issue or is one core borked?

Any chance of trying a fresh install? that is really weird mate. Says system idle at 99% but you can clearly see at the bottom right hand that cpu usage is at 50%, might be a borked windows tbh.

Are you using any software cooling/idle programs, i remember back in the day when those were popular (but still pointless) it used to show 100% usage in task manager but it really was'nt

no its nothing like that because performance is effected massively. i cant game when the core is doing this. its definitely doing what it looks like its doing.

cheers for the link. tried it and it was showing around 46 for hadware interrupts and 12 for dpc. rebooted and now its fairly normal again, but for how long i have no idea.

if it happens again , run windows in safe mode and see what happens there. If all is ok then a driver issue or conflict may be the problem. But if the same thing happens in safe mode then something is most likely broken and a phone call to the amd tech department is needed

Thanks for that.

On your problem, my barton 3000 had a similar problem, randomly showing 100% CPU usage and destroying the sound (due to WMP not being able to use it). I had various reasons such as virus and windows update but the only thing that actually stopped it was a complete reinstall. There is no problem with the core just the software. :(

Hope that helps :)

Curious btw, have you installed any windows updates etc. before the problem started? also have you applied the dual core AMD patch?

thanks for all the help guys. it was a windows problem. corrupted itself beyond redemption no doubt but its all working fine again now.
