Dual CPU Motherboards in the real world - advice please!

wouldn't a standard quad with an overclock be fast enough, something like the Q9550, with it being yorkfield it should easily clock, or wouldn't it be powerful enough?

Don't suppose you can do something like that over linux? I'm guessing you'd have problems with Blu-Ray support but i would have thought a cluster would be rather handy for this task!

Here's a really expensive RAID controller:

Adaptec Sata & Sas Raid 31205 Pci-e 8-lane 256mb 12-channel Raid.

Price: £363

And you could always buy a Quadro card if you want flawless drivers and features for GPU rendering:

Nvidia Quadro FX 3700

Price: £630

Not sure about the expensive raid controller but I definitely forgot about these GPUs !

You gotta get one of these if you're serious about your job,
They aint cheap 350-2000quid BUT you will definitely see a difference :).
Afair the NVIDIA ones were called quadro while the ATI Series was called FireGL. Those are suited for professional graphic works and such.

Hi Big Cheese,

I'm basically looking to build a similar machine to yours but for 3D modelling and rendering. I hope you don't think im interrupting your thread and please say if i am, but i wanted to add a quick question while the subject was on.

It sounds like the Intel Skulltrail is not a particularly good option, and from looking at Tyan website there seems to be a few potential motherboards. Can anyone recommend a good board from Tyan and would it be worth going for a dual quad core option in these circumstances? If so any advice again would be appreciated.

Dell Precision T7400 Workstation - Dual Quad-Core Xeons, 16Gb RAM, SAS Array of HDD, Dual 768Gb QuadroFX graphics cards - the right thing for the job basically - but it's £4500+VAT:eek:

I can't believe I'm mentioning this but have you looked at the mac pro

Dual quad core xeons + fully configurable + windows compatible.

sid

i also suggest mac pro

you dont have to have mac on it any more you can have windows.

although, i use all 3 oses linux, win, mac linux and mac are defo more reliable but,

as you haven't used mac i can see why you did not use this as a option but it only took me 1 week to get used to mac and know where stuff is

and programs inside mac eg cs2 are exact same as they are in windows but they seem more snappier :)

or put windows on your mac

I have a Skulltrail with 2 E5420s and 4gb kingston FBDIMMS PC2 6400

My mobo, CPUs and ram cost me £906 delivered. A large PSU like the Enermax Galaxy is required as it needs 2 8 pin CPU power connectors. The galaxy well my Galaxy 1000w has this.

Hmm how about a MacPro 2x 8core + 16GB of ram?

The memory will be the same cost.. about a grand for 16GB of FB-DIMM.
