SPEC: AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 1GB CORSAIR 3200 MEMORY, ATI RADEON 9800SE AIW, Shuttle XPC SK21G

Hi All,

Yesterday I realised that, as I hardly game now, I would make my computer 300% smaller and 200% quieter by moving from my Thermaltake MASSIVE case into a nice portable Shuttle system. As I have got rid of my tele that was in the computer room I wanted to go dual display with my old 19" CRT.

What I wanted to do was use the Onboard VGA along with the ATI AGP card to do dual display although after reading this thread - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17624122&highlight=loud+fan it became obvious that it wasn’t possible....balls!

Also I found that my previous 'silent system' wasn’t being silent because of the fan on my ATI card! It’s loud! - compared to the power supply anyway. I thought it was simply the 7 fans on the case!

Basically what I’m asking is:

- Will adding a PCI graphics card for the other monitor allow me to have dual display (the bios gives the option of VGA AGP/Onboard or VGA PCI)

- If so what graphics card is a reasonable one to go for...don’t really want to spend too much.

- Is there a card without a fan or with a really quiet fan that I can get which supports dual display?

I rarely game...when I do its just Red Alert...so don’t need anything to amazing. I was looking at:

Sapphire X1300 256MB DDR AVIVO TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-119-SP)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ATI_AGP_Graphics_Cards.html

Then getting this for my TV Needs:

Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T PCI Freeview TV Tuner (GX-024-HA)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/TV_Cards.html

Any comments much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

p.s I have tried ATI Tool and ATI Tray Tools - both do not have fan control for the RADEON so I cant even turn the fan speed down to reduce the noise. I have tried unplugging it but it just gets too hot - especially with being in a shuttle!

i dont know if the fan control was on the pro's just like the temp sensor. think it was only on the XT's

but yeah, any graphics card you can find that has 2 outputs should do the job. I've got a fanless radeon 7000 pci card that was able to play red alert pretty fine and does support dual monitors so id assume the x300 should be more than adequate for what your looking for :)
