Dual distros and partitions

If I install multiple distros (Fedora, Ubuntu...) onto the same hard disk, can they share partitions without disturbing each other?

Each distro would be installed to it's own partition, but /usr, /home or any viable partition would be shared. I'm not sure exactly how linux uses partitions, but I'm guessing I can keep a central partition(s) to store files.

I'd need that partition(s) to stay if I removed one of the distros.

sounds like a recipe for disaster imo. The only partitions I would recommend you doing something like this for would be /home, your swap file and (if applicable) /tmp.
