At work, I am using a dell 30" that requires a dual link dvi cable

now, the laptop i currently use conected to it (haev to use laptops because of onsite days) conects via dvi and i get lovely 2560 x 1600

SO, now, the rest of the compay have had new xps laptops and on 24" dells

I have been told I can have a new laptop if i can get it to work with my monitor.

If i conect to thier laptop via all the options we have found, I can only get 1200 x 800 resolution (no good)

So can anybody point me towards an option. the laptops in quest have hdmi and mini DP ports.

We have tried a hdmi - dual link cable, but still same resolution.
we have also tried a mini dp - dvi convertor. still same.

Our think there is that the options are not then Dual link

does anybody have any possible solutions?

the anoying thing is, there is an ATI hardware solution, than they use to conect to 6 monitors, that would work, the XPS has a nvidia G.card

Hi there, does your dell monitor have a full-size DP connection (afaik the 3008WFP and U3011 have these, but not the 3007WFP)? If it does then a simple, passive mini-DP (male) to full-size DP cable will convert the signal and this connection can support a 2560x1600@60Hz signal. Failing that, there are mini-displayport to Dual-link DVI active adapters, however they are not too cheap (~£70).

Also, may I ask what is the model number of these particular XPS laptops you have available? Hopefully they can support 2560x1600@60Hz on an external monitor through the mini-DP port, if not then unfortunately these laptops are not suitable for use with such a nice and high resolution monitor.

Edit: Looking at the new XPX laptops with the Nvidia GT 525M graphics card, it appears that they can indeed support 2560x1600@60Hz via the mini-DP port. Hence if your monitor only has a DVI input then an active adapter like the "startech Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter" should work fine. If the monitor also has a Displayport or mini-DP input, then a cheap and simple passive cable will do the job fine.

hi m8, yeah shoudl have mentioned, it is indeed the 3007wfp

teh new laptops are xps 555 m

the monitor only has DVI

We have tried a mini dp tp dvi, but after a discussion (after reading this) it seesm it isnt a an active cable

thanks for the advice m8, just going to work on gettgin the boss to buy an active :)

just for inofrmation, we ordered one of the Startech adapters today, so will let you know if it works.

after mr boss ordered it, he said "if this doesent work, we will have to buy you one of the new dell 30" monitors" sometimes i like having ever so slightly dodgy eyes :)
